The History of Putney, Vermont, 1753 to 1953 (1953) – $15

A photocopy of The History of Putney by the Fortnightly Club of Putney, produced for the 200th anniversary of the town in 1953, edited by Edith De Wolfe, Lura H. Frost, Edith I. Gassett, Inez S. Harlow and Elizabeth G. Scott.  Chapters include 1) Pioneer Settlement, 2) The Development of the Settlement, 3) Economic Development, 4) Religion, 5) Education and Culture, 6) Through the Years – Miscellany and 7) Putney People.  Illustrations include maps of the 1753 fort on the Great Meadows, the 19th century Old Wheat Tavern, East Putney in 1876, Putney village in 1856, location of early ferries across the Connecticut River, as well as a number of drawings and photographs.


Putney: World’s Best Known Small Town (2003) – $25

A high quality paperback updated history of Putney produced for the 250th anniversary of the town in 2003, produced by the Putney Historical Society through the efforts of a large number of residents and others.  Chapters include 1) Blazing a Trail: Early History to 1799, 2) Shaping a Town: 1800-1899, 3) Becoming Modern: 1900-1929, 4) Doing More with Less: 1930s, 5) Coping with War: 1940-1945, 6) Coming of Age: 1945-1959 (or so), 7) Changing Our Ways of Life: 1960s-1970s, 8) Adjusting to a New Era: 1980s and 9) Ending the Century: 1990s.  Also includes many historic photographs.


Vital Records of Putney, Vermont to the year 1900 with selected additional records (1992) – $30

A hardcover edition of vital records compiled from the original town records by Ken Stevens and produced by the Genealogical Society of Vermont. 

Sections include Forward, Introduction, Putney Cemeteries, Population, Births and Baptisms, Marriages and Intentions, Deaths, Warnings Out, Church Admissions and Dismissals, Heads of Households, 1771-1840.

 


Photocopy of the results of historical research conducted by the Fortnightly Club to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the town in 1953.  Chapters include 1) Historical Sketches, 2) Putney Sons and Daughters, 3) The Arts and Poetry, 4) Putney People of 1953. 

There is also a Putney Business and Professional Directory, list of Town Officers in 1953 and a description of the organizing committee for the 200th anniversary celebration.

 


A Complete Listing of Gravestone Inscriptions in Putney, Vermont (1994) – $20

Photocopy a complete listing of gravestone inscriptions in the fifteen cemeteries of Putney to 1900.  This listing was compiled to provide information for the Vital Records publication for the town.  Cemeteries included are Mount Pleasant, Old North Burying Ground, Maple Grove, East Putney, West Hill, Houghton Farm, Dipping Hole, Dusty Ridge, McWain, Joy, Lowell, Aplin, Davis, Kathan and Allyn. 

There is also a list of gravestones that had previously been reported but can no longer be found.
