The town offices were housed in this building until 1967 when they were moved to the Town Hall. This building was located just north of Basketville and reportedly was constructed in 1812.

Putney Town Hall, in 1902
The Town Hall was constructed in 1871 and is seen in this photo from the Fairchild collection with eighteen young people standing in front and one person visible through the open doorway sitting in the present town manager’s office. The building originally did not house town offices. However, the building met many other uses over time. Such uses included the “Central School” for grades 8 to 12, meetings of various religious groups, even a barber shop. The select board may have met there as well.
The young people in the photo may have been students in the Central School. It is unclear who the person inside might have been, perhaps Bert Pierce, one of the first teachers or an unknown select board member. The second floor was used for town meeting as well as many social events such as dances, plays and musical performances. In the background of this photo can be seen the carriage shed. Town Hall is centrally located in the village and currently houses the town offices and the Putney Historical Society. The town and PHS are working together to rehabilitate the building to make it more accessible and efficient.
