Starting in 2008, PHS raised and managed over $1.4 million to acquire, reconstruct & reopen the burned Putney General Store. This project is an example of an unusual but increasingly popular approach to community and economic revitalization: the community supported enterprise. PHS continues to own and manage the real estate of the store at the heart of the village and ensures it is leased to a viable store operator to continue serving the Putney community and village economy as an anchor business. The non-profit ownership model allowed fundraising to offset the cost (and therefore debt) of the construction project in order to keep the lease low and sustainable for a general store business to operate in a small town. The store has been open since December 2011 and continues to be a successful grocery and deli business with a new pharmacy on the second floor.
