Immediately after the tragic November 1 fire which destroyed the Putney General Store, the Putney Craft Tour responded with a raffle, donating handcrafted prizes worth over $3K. The drawing was held Friday night at the Putney Community Supper, also hosted by the Craft Tour.

What’s the status of the arson investigation?
The case is still active, though there’s been no specific update from the Fire Marshall, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, or the State’s Attorney (who is prosecuting the case)…but that’s not surprising. The investigators are working quietly, behind the scenes, and they can’t share information without jeopardizing the case. The ATF is currently the primary investigatory force. A $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for setting the fire (Call 1-800-32-ARSON & reference case #09-D202950).

The longest-running general store in Vermont, dating to the mid-1790s, was lost to arson on November 1. Now, with grants from Chittenden Bank and the Harris and Frances Block Foundation as well as strong community donation and sustained support from the Preservation Trust of Vermont and the Windham Foundation, the Putney Historical Society is firming up plans to rebuild on the foundation in the center of town, and plans a community meeting to update the community on its progress.
